September & October in Croatia: The Best Months You're Not Considering

Sea temperature 24 °C, empty beaches, Plitvice in autumn colours — September and October on the Dalmatian coast are arguably better than August.

The Adriatic Holds Its Heat

Most people picture Croatia as a July-and-August destination and assume that September means a cold sea and closed restaurants. Neither is true.

The Adriatic is a shallow, semi-enclosed sea that absorbs heat throughout the summer and releases it slowly. By September the water is 24–26 °C — warmer than most Atlantic destinations manage in their best weeks. October stays at 21–23 °C. You can swim comfortably well into October on the Dalmatian coast.

Those who know this come back in September and October every year. Those who don't are still fighting for sunbeds in August.

What Changes After the Peak

The transformation between 31 August and 10 September on the Dalmatian coast is striking:

The September Agenda

[Petrčane beach](/apartmany) in September is as close to a private beach as a public one gets. The water is at its clearest after a summer of calm weather. Morning swims, afternoon reading, evening walks along the coast path — the rhythm that actually constitutes a holiday.

[Zadar](/blog/zadar) in September has all its attractions and none of the queues. The Sea Organ, the Greeting to the Sun installation on the waterfront, the Roman forum, the Cathedral of St Anastasia — all of it accessible without navigating a tour-group blockade. The old town café terraces are occupied by Croatians again, which is a reliable indicator of quality.

[Nin](/blog/nin) in September is particularly good. The lagoon water reaches 27–28 °C in the shallows, and the beach — sandy, child-friendly, dog-tolerant — is a fraction of its August occupancy.

[Kornati day trips](/blog/kornati) run through the end of September and into mid-October. The archipelago of 89 uninhabited islands is at its most atmospheric in early autumn, when the light is lower and the sea a deeper blue.

Why October Deserves Attention

October is the insider's month.

[Plitvice Lakes](/blog/plitvicka-jezera) in October is, by most measures, the best the park ever looks. The beech and maple forest turns gold and deep red above the travertine waterfalls. The waterfalls themselves are fuller — autumn rainfall tops up the lakes. Tourist numbers drop sharply. A park that in August means shuffling along boardwalks becomes a genuine experience of one of Europe's most beautiful landscapes.

October weather is reliable in September's mould — a couple of cooler or overcast days are realistic, but these are the days for Plitvice (overcast light is better for photography) or a morning in Zadar's coffee culture.

Practical Information

Flights: Ryanair operates Zadar routes through the end of October. Check schedules in advance as frequencies drop after mid-September.

When to book: September fills 6–8 weeks ahead, particularly 8–22 September. October is more flexible — 3–4 weeks is typically sufficient.

What to bring: A light layer for evenings from late September. September needs nothing more than summer clothing. October adds a jacket for evenings and cooler days.

The Honest Comparison

| | August | September | October | |---|---|---|---| | Sea (°C) | 26–28 | 24–26 | 21–23 | | Beaches | Crowded | Quiet | Near-empty | | Plitvice | Hot, very busy | Good | Outstanding | | Prices | Peak | −25 % | −40 % | | Flights | Many | Good | Limited but available |

September and October are not the consolation prize for travellers who missed August. For a significant number of experienced Adriatic visitors, they are the point.

Check availability for September and October — dates go faster than you might expect.
